(H.P. LOVECRAFT) CRYPT OF CTHULHU Edited by Robert M. Price: 1st 85 issues!, (H.P. LOVECRAFT) Robert M. Price, editor.
1 (H.P. LOVECRAFT) Robert M. Price, editor. (H.P. LOVECRAFT) CRYPT OF CTHULHU Edited by Robert M. Price: 1st 85 issues!

CRYPT OF CTHULHU evolved from a one-man-24-page effort to a 64-page publication that become the premiere H.P. Lovecraft journal for more than a decade. Editor Robert M. Price wrote every article in the first issue and even illustrated it as well! The 2nd issue received contributions in addition to the editor from Charles Garofalo, Ronald Shearer, and C.J. Henderson; by the time issue #9 came around, "COC" had attracted the Lovecraft Illuminati: S.T. Joshi, Peter Cannon, Will Murray, Lin Carter, Colin Wilson, Don Burleson, Darrell Schweitzer, Richard L. Tierney, and artist Jason Eckhardt who's illustration would grace many of its covers. COC would not only publish noteworthy articles on H.P. Lovecraft and his work, but poetry, unpublished fragments, letters, false-starts, etc., by HPL and other notables including, Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, E. Hoffmann Price and other members of the HPL circle of acquaintances, and tales by the current Cabal of Lovecraft-styled fictions. The first 10 issues are especially difficult to acquire, with the first three or four, seem to move underground from collector to collector without ever coming to the mainstream market. Never seen another such set offered! I am also including variant issues and SHUDDER STORIES #1, and RISQUE STORIES #1, also published by CRYPT OF CTHULHU. Bringing the total to around 90 issues.

2 (LOVECRAFT, H.P.) NATIONAL TRIBUTE. April, 1922
Brooklyn N.Y. Dorothy Houtain 1922
Houtain - a rather witty chap - devotes the last page of the 'zine to a meeting of the four "Saints" of A.J., with "St. Philip (Howard Phillips Lovecraft) occupying the stellar position in the North" with Loveman as the South, Rheinhart Kleiner the East and Houtain himself as the West. Houtain a long time amateur journalist accords HPL his due as the best of them all.

3 (LOVECRAFT, H.P.) NATIONAL TRIBUTE. December, 1921
Brooklyn N.Y. Dorothy Houtain 1921
Apparently Ms., MacLaughlin is single no longer and has moved to Brooklyn to be with her new husband, George Houtain. Mrs., Houtain defends the National Amateur Association against the critique of Howard P. Lovecraft (then a United Amateur member), that they - the National - "do not spend enough ime on literary attainment and too much time in digging up other peoples' skeletons and trying to bring them to life." Her points are well taken.

It's 1934 and Lovecraft is still at it, critiquing the VERSE when his talent clearly wasn't in VERSE! I suppose it didn't really matter much anyway! He got the front page on this issue. V.g., copy unfolded.

AMERICAN AMATEUR.. July, 1921. No. 2., (LOVECRAFT, H.P.)
11 (LOVECRAFT, H.P.) AMERICAN AMATEUR.. July, 1921. No. 2.
Ridgefield Park, N.J. Dorothy MacLaughlin,
Nothing by H.P. Lovecraft, however there is a half-page piece by the soon-to-be-Mrs. Lovecraft, Sonia Greene, entitled "LOSTED," In addition there is a revealing piece about her by Helen Heins' article - IMPRESSIONS OF THE BOSTON NATION CONVENTION - "I was rorry that save a few words Sonia Greene did not get the opportunity to enthrall the banquet with her personality and magnetism. We who have had the pleasure of her acquaintance could have assured a treat. As it is, she has captured many hearts of the male sex, and her charming manners under trying circumstances will be one of my best recollections of the convention." How odd given her physical attributes and charm, that she chose H.P. Lovecraft upon whom to grace with her affections when obviously she could've had anybody she wanted! It's not often when women speak so glowingly about another woman. V.g., copy.
