THE PRIVATE PRESS OF ROY A. SQUIRES: A BIBLIOGRAPHY., (BRADBURY, LOVECRAFT, ROBERT E. HOWARD,LEIBER, CLARK ASHTON SMITH).
2 (BRADBURY, LOVECRAFT, ROBERT E. HOWARD,LEIBER, CLARK ASHTON SMITH). THE PRIVATE PRESS OF ROY A. SQUIRES: A BIBLIOGRAPHY.
Glendale, Calif.: Roy A. Squires, 1987. First Edition. Handsewn into heavy cover papers. As new.
The Private Press of Roy A. Squires' was the noted printer's bibliography of his own printing publications and was ironically the last booklet he printed as he died of cancer the following year. Roy A. Squires was one of Ray Bradbury's earliest friends when the author moved to California, and it was Squires who took Ray to his first LASFAS meeting at Clifton Cafeteria. Squires was also Clark Ashton Smith's friend and literary executor after Smith's death. Squires also met and befriended H. P. Lovecraft's wife - Sonia Greene and Clark Ashton Smith's wife, Carol Dorman. But Squires will best be remembered as the printer/publisher of booklets of the highest quality, printing upon a small primitive press from handset type, utilizing fine papers of authors, Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton smith, Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber, Frank Belknap Long, and his friend, Phil Garland. Squires printed 39 booklets including this, his bibliography. This state of his bibliography comprise what he termed his "larger paper copy" of 80 numbered copies with leaves tipped-in from six of his publications.

LOVECRAFT: A BIOGRAPHY (With a signed sticker from De Camp present), (LOVECRAFT, H.P.) DE CAMP, L. SPRAGUE
4 (LOVECRAFT, H.P.) DE CAMP, L. SPRAGUE LOVECRAFT: A BIOGRAPHY (With a signed sticker from De Camp present)
Garden City, New York Doubleday 1975 First Edition
There is no such thing as an impartial biography and if there were it would be too boring to read! No matter how much one tries to be impartial, certain things move us or do not move us based upon our own personality and experience. De Camp's critical biography ("I saw in him certain of my own shortcomings . . . ") raised a howl amongst Lovecraft enthusiasts that kept HPL fanzines a-buzz for years afterward. S.T. Joshi has pointed out errors in the book but errors are noteworthy as they motivate us further to seek the truth. De Camp's biography flows well and reads quickly as one would expect from a pulp magazine veteran and I would urge it upon you as the one you read before you attempt to tackle Joshi's. Gerry de la Ree was the first bookseller I ever knew who began the practice of signed book stickers. This copy bears such a signed sticker. This is a fine unread copy copy in a d.j. that would be very fine but for a 1/2" closed tear and wrinkle at lower front panel. No price clipping. Slight foxing at page edges of photos else about fine in v.g. d.j.

Glendale, Calif.: Roy A. Squires, First Printing. Staplebound wraps. As new.
I still marvel at the Roy Squires catalogs and it's more than forty years later! They are written with such erudition, humor and good taste. This catalog includes Lovecraft's own copy of his stillborn book - "THE SHUNNED" house - inscribed by the binder, Robert H. Barlow - "For H.P.L. who only wrote it. With the compliments of the binder R.H.B., June 9, 1935. On the occasion of his second visit." Bound in full leather. $950 (that was a lot of money in those days!!) ROBERT E. HOWARD: THE MISCAST BARBARIAN., (ROBERT E. HOWARD) DE CAMP, L. SPRAGUE.
6 (ROBERT E. HOWARD) DE CAMP, L. SPRAGUE. ROBERT E. HOWARD: THE MISCAST BARBARIAN.
Saddle River, NJ.: Gerry de la Ree, 1975. First Edition. Staplebound into heavy paper covers. As new.
This book - an expansion of his essay in his Arkham House book "Literary Swordsmen & Sorcerers" - was the preliminary to de Camp's full-blown biography of REH entitled: "DARK VALLEY DESTINY," published by BlueJay books in 1983. It's a very nicely done book with artwork throughout by Stephen Fabian, Virgil Finlay, Roy Krenkel, George Barr and C. Lee Healy, with an excellent portrait by Charlie McGill of Howard on the cover. Printed upon heavy quality paper the text is divided into 10 parts: 1. The Formative Years, 2. The Die is Cast, 3. Into Manhood, 4. Literary Influences, 5. Celtic Heritage, 6. A Product of His Times, 7. His Markets Widen, 8. Thoughts of Suicide, 9. The Arrival of Conan, 10. His Writing Style, 11. Into Other Areas, 12. Productive Years, 13. All Fled All Done, 14. Possible Reasons, 15. The Revival. If you don't have a lot of time to read De Camp's book-length biography, this makes for a great crash-course introduction, is very concise, and a fast read. De Camp had the advantage of visiting Howard's hometown, CROSS PLAINS in 1965 when there were still people alive who'd know Robert E. Howard

JAMES P. BLAYLOCK: A Bibliography of American & English Editions. [SIGNED], BLAYLOCK, JAMES P.
10 BLAYLOCK, JAMES P. JAMES P. BLAYLOCK: A Bibliography of American & English Editions. [SIGNED]
Royal Oak, Michigan, Mission Viejo, California: ASAP {Airtight Seals Allied Production,} 1992. First Printing. Staplebound into stiff heavy covers. As new.
James P. Blaylock is a Clint Eastwood-built, soft-spoken fellow who writes with a sharp wit, a scholar's pen and the heart of a small boy - that he keeps in a jar on his desk - as good old Robert Bloch used to quip! A bit premature this bibliography I think, as JPB was just hitting his stride - and has shown no signs of letting up - nevertheless it does provide pertinent information regarding his output - especially the slip-cased limited editions. SIGNED by the subject, the artist and the elusive - "William Ashbless." Limited to 225 SIGNED, numbered copies. There was no hardcover publication of this item. 225 copies.

JAMES BRANCH CABELL: A collection of his works: Roy A. Squires: Catalog 10., CABELL, JAMES BRANCH.
14 CABELL, JAMES BRANCH. JAMES BRANCH CABELL: A collection of his works: Roy A. Squires: Catalog 10.
Glendale, Calif.: Roy A. Squires, Staplebound into stiff paper wraps. Very fine.
Roy liked having "themes" for his catalogues whenever possible, and very often would single-out an author if he got in a large collection of his/her works, and sometimes if he simply liked that author himself! Such was the case here when he featured an author he enjoyed reading and felt had been unjustly neglected, and he had just gotten this large collection of his works to be able to offer as a whole. 135 titles altogether for the grand sum of $4650...I didn't know a damn thing about Cabell at the time but would've paid that sum based upon Squires' own descriptions had I had it! A Cabell bibliographic education thrown in for free! Squires catalogues 1-20 plus supplement have become highly cherished collectors items especially for those of us who knew him personally; the early ones are quite scarce. I still marvel at the Roy Squires catalogs and it's more than forty years later! They are written with such erudition, humor and good taste. There was no one like him. From the Roy A. Squires archive! Fine unread copy of this scarce catalogue!

West Kingston, RI Donald M. Grant 1978 First Edition
This epic work occupied Donald Sidney-Fryer from 1960 to the late 1970's. If "EOD" existed only as a bibliography, you would be more than suitably impressedlisting not only the entirety of Smith's book publications from 1912 to 1978, but the contents of each book both poetry & prose, along with his magazine appearances of both poetry & prose; an index of the "First lines" of that poetry; anthology appearances both poetry & prose, letters, essayshowever it is more than a "bibliography," it additionally includes personal asides by those who knew him, laudatory essays by such notables as Ray Bradbury, Fritz Leiber, August Derleth and evenyes, Harlan Ellison! A biography of CAS, and accompanying photographs of CAS and his environs. Exhaustive and exhausting when you consider that this was all done before the age of the personal computer!
