THE PRIVATE PRESS OF ROY A. SQUIRES: A BIBLIOGRAPHY., (BRADBURY, LOVECRAFT, ROBERT E. HOWARD,LEIBER, CLARK ASHTON SMITH).
1 (BRADBURY, LOVECRAFT, ROBERT E. HOWARD,LEIBER, CLARK ASHTON SMITH). THE PRIVATE PRESS OF ROY A. SQUIRES: A BIBLIOGRAPHY.
Glendale, Calif.: Roy A. Squires, 1987. First Edition. Handsewn into heavy cover papers. As new.
The Private Press of Roy A. Squires' was the noted printer's bibliography of his own printing publications and was ironically the last booklet he printed as he died of cancer the following year. Roy A. Squires was one of Ray Bradbury's earliest friends when the author moved to California, and it was Squires who took Ray to his first LASFAS meeting at Clifton Cafeteria. Squires was also Clark Ashton Smith's friend and literary executor after Smith's death. Squires also met and befriended H. P. Lovecraft's wife - Sonia Greene and Clark Ashton Smith's wife, Carol Dorman. But Squires will best be remembered as the printer/publisher of booklets of the highest quality, printing upon a small primitive press from handset type, utilizing fine papers of authors, Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton smith, Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber, Frank Belknap Long, and his friend, Phil Garland. Squires printed 39 booklets including this, his bibliography. This state of his bibliography comprise what he termed his "larger paper copy" of 80 numbered copies with leaves tipped-in from six of his publications.

ROBERT E. HOWARD: THE MISCAST BARBARIAN., (ROBERT E. HOWARD) DE CAMP, L. SPRAGUE.
4 (ROBERT E. HOWARD) DE CAMP, L. SPRAGUE. ROBERT E. HOWARD: THE MISCAST BARBARIAN.
Saddle River, NJ.: Gerry de la Ree, 1975. First Edition. Staplebound into heavy paper covers. As new.
This book - an expansion of his essay in his Arkham House book "Literary Swordsmen & Sorcerers" - was the preliminary to de Camp's full-blown biography of REH entitled: "DARK VALLEY DESTINY," published by BlueJay books in 1983. It's a very nicely done book with artwork throughout by Stephen Fabian, Virgil Finlay, Roy Krenkel, George Barr and C. Lee Healy, with an excellent portrait by Charlie McGill of Howard on the cover. Printed upon heavy quality paper the text is divided into 10 parts: 1. The Formative Years, 2. The Die is Cast, 3. Into Manhood, 4. Literary Influences, 5. Celtic Heritage, 6. A Product of His Times, 7. His Markets Widen, 8. Thoughts of Suicide, 9. The Arrival of Conan, 10. His Writing Style, 11. Into Other Areas, 12. Productive Years, 13. All Fled All Done, 14. Possible Reasons, 15. The Revival. If you don't have a lot of time to read De Camp's book-length biography, this makes for a great crash-course introduction, is very concise, and a fast read. De Camp had the advantage of visiting Howard's hometown, CROSS PLAINS in 1965 when there were still people alive who'd know Robert E. Howard

ARKHAM HOUSE: ROBERT E. HOWARD SKULL-FACE: & Others: EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION!, HOWARD, Robert E.
7 HOWARD, Robert E. ARKHAM HOUSE: ROBERT E. HOWARD SKULL-FACE: & Others: EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION!
Sauk City, Arkham House, 1946. [First edition].
Robert E. Howard's SKULL-FACE was one of the greatest books Arkham House ever published; I rank it 2nd behind, THE OUTSIDER by H.P. Lovecraft, in collectibility in the Arkham House canon. And though THE GENT FROM BEAR CREEK, British 1st is rarer by far, SKULL-FACE is truly the cornerstone of any Robert E. Howard collection! This is a splendid, fine copy with few flaws and the dust-jacket is virtually as fresh as the day it was published; note no discoloration on the verso. The book still has the "new car" Arkham House smell! No fingerprints on the cloth, no yellowing to the verso of the d.j., just a few slight creases. One corner just nubbed in its initial shipment. This copy came new from an original Arkham House buyer and it is very fresh. Simply put, the best copy I've had in 30 years and priced accordingly! A fine copy in fine d.j., with a few slight creases.

ROBERT E. HOWARD: SAILOR DORGAN AND THE JADE MONKEY. Original typescript with 50 holograph corrections!, HOWARD, Robert E.
12 HOWARD, Robert E. ROBERT E. HOWARD: SAILOR DORGAN AND THE JADE MONKEY. Original typescript with 50 holograph corrections!

As indicated by the color stamping on the first page of the typescript, this was the original submission manuscript to THE MAGIC CARPET MAGAZINE (edited by Farnsworth Wright) and announced as forthcoming in the January, 1934 issue. Unfortunately the magazine folded with that issue which must've been a very sudden demise indeed, as it got as far as the typesetter's notations — the final stage before publication! REH had just signed on with agent, Otis Adelbert Kline, no doubt in the hopes of more expedient payment and broadening his publication base as there is a printed sticker in the upper l.h., corner — Submitted by Otis Adelbert Kline — an added bonus of having the Otis Adelbert Kline agency on the manuscript; and note too that upon this resubmission, "Sailor Costigan," is lined through and "Sailor Dorgan" is substitutted — nice to have two REH hero names in one manuscript! REH had had three stories previously published in MAGIC CARPET which probably accounted for adopting his pseudonym, Patrick Ervin, as his own name has been crossed through. and his pen-name, Patrick Ervin is now present. The typescript is fifteen pages in length and there are approximately 50 pencilled corrections throughout the manuscript. Although the story did not sell during Howard's lifetime, it did finally appear in the Spring, 1971 issue of THE HOWARD COLLECTOR and in the 1974 FAX Publication hardbound, THE INCREDIBLE ADVENTURES OF DENNIS DORGAN. Original REH manuscript material is rare — and a complete one not missing pages is extremely rare — and that is not a term I flippantly use — they seldom come on the open market but are more often passed from private collector to private collector. With all the addendum, this makes for a fascinating manuscript! The typescript is fifteen pages, approximately 5000 words, in length, housed in a sturdy cloth traycase with an inner chemise; each page in a mylar sleeve. Very good + condition.

THE SOWERS OF THE THUNDER., HOWARD, Robert E.
16 HOWARD, Robert E. THE SOWERS OF THE THUNDER.
West Kingston, Donald M. Grant, 1973. First edition. Near fine. Near fine. Jacket
One of my favorite all-time books! And despite the fairly large print-run of 2509 copies, one that came and went so quickly I could only get one on the secondary market. Illustrated with nearly every one of its 280 pages graced with either an illustration or page-decoration it took Roy Krenkel nearly seven years to finish the book; it became his magnum opus and a book that influenced "Wandering Star" publishers when they went on to publish their lavish edition of SOLOMON KANE, illustrated by Gary Gianni. These stories are four of Howard's "battle" stories, set in the Far East during the Times of the great Khan and originally appeared in ORIENTAL STORIES and MAGIC CARPET magazines. This would be followed six years later by THE ROAD OF AZRAEL that just didn't quite work for me despite the fine paintings. One of about 700 copies either inscribed or signed by the artist at the publisher's request. Noted collector, Eric Carlson's copy inscribed to him by Roy Krenkel. About fine copy (there's always a few snags to the d.j., an inherent problem with the book).

17 HOWARD, ROBERT E. VALLEY OF THE LOST

Chuck Miller was a "pioneer" in the REH boom of the early 1970's, both as a publisher and specialty bookseller, and remained a lifelong REH enthusiast. THE VALLEY OF THE LOST — his first publication— premiered in STARTLING MYSTERY magazine, Spring, 1967. A skillful blending of Western story with Supernatural. Printed in an edition of 777 copies, SIGNED & NUMBERED by artist Bot Roda. Very fine copy of this deckle edged booklet.

MARK SCHULTZ: CONAN—PHOENIX ON THE SWORD—ORIGINAL ART!, SCHULTZ, Mark, (HOWARD, Robert E.)
19 SCHULTZ, Mark, (HOWARD, Robert E.) MARK SCHULTZ: CONAN—PHOENIX ON THE SWORD—ORIGINAL ART!
Wandering Star 2002 First Edition
Mark Schultz is one of best and most popular illustrators working today!  He publishes frequently with Fleske publishers and his XENOZOIC tales are hugely popular.  He's done work for DARK HORSE comics and DC, but I first discovered him with the publication of Volume 1 of the deluxe book series published by Wandering Star — ROBERT E. HOWARD's — CONAN OF CIMMERIA cycle.  Shultz set the tone and standard for the series by illustrating the first book in 2002 — WOW! How time flies!! I remember seeing the original black and white artwork at San Diego ComicCon and was completely blown away with its beauty and passion!  Unfortunately all I could afford at the time were a few preliminaries. The piece I offer here is pg. 23 —"Who dies first?", Conan grinned mirthlessly and ferociously.  A pencilled preliminary.  Shultz's prelims are so polished and detailed that you have to look twice to be sure what's-what!  Compare it to the finished pen & ink. The piece measures 8-1/2 x 11 and is signed in pencil with his exuberant signature!
