10 GRENDON, Stephen/DERLETH, August MR. GEORGE and OTHER ODD PERSONS.
Sauk City, Arkham House 1963 [First Edition]
Seventeen stories collected primarily from WEIRD TALES magazine. And as the author himself says of them in his introduction—"I have come to think many of them among the best macabre tales I have written." All the tales composed within a month(!) in the wee hours of the morning, and under great duress, as the author's primary assignment at that time was his novel, THE SHIELD OF THE VALIANT. A very fine copy in d.j., without the usual spine discoloration. Uncommon thus. The first listing from the Richard M. Jefts complete Arkham House collection. #RMJ1.

This British author was practically unknown here in the States, until Derleth published the landmark volume—HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND—some of the author's longer works: DEEP WATERS presents a sampling of the author's excellent shorter works. Lovecraft lauded Hodgson's work in his SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE. "THE VOICE IN THE NIGHT" contained herein is a classic in the literature. [2556 copies printed]. A nice fresh tight fine copy in d.j. #24JS

ROBERT E. HOWARD SKULL-FACE: & Others: EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION!, HOWARD, Robert E.
12 HOWARD, Robert E. ROBERT E. HOWARD SKULL-FACE: & Others: EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION!
Sauk City, Arkham House, 1946. [First edition].
Robert E. Howard's SKULL-FACE was one of the greatest books Arkham House ever published; I rank it 2nd behind, THE OUTSIDER by H.P. Lovecraft, in collectibility in the Arkham House canon. And though THE GENT FROM BEAR CREEK, British 1st is rarer by far, SKULL-FACE is truly the cornerstone of any Robert E. Howard collection! This is a splendid, fine copy with few flaws and the dust-jacket is virtually as fresh as the day it was published; note no discoloration on the verso. The book still has the "new car" Arkham House smell! No fingerprints on the cloth, no yellowing to the verso of the d.j., just a few slight creases. One corner just nubbed in its initial shipment. This copy came new from an original Arkham House buyer and it is very fresh. Simply put, the best copy I've had in 30 years and priced accordingly! A fine copy in fine d.j., with a few slight creases.

H.P. LOVECRAFT: MARGINALIA!, LOVECRAFT, H.P.
19 LOVECRAFT, H.P. H.P. LOVECRAFT: MARGINALIA!
Sauk City Arkham House 1944 [First edition]. 2035 copies.
MARGINALIA is the earliest of the miscellanea volumes published to fill the "demands of our readers" for more HPL and more information about HPL. It's certainly a worthy addition to the canon including his Houdini rewrite IMPRISIONED WITH THE PHARAOHS, his revisions MEDUSA'S COIL, WINGED DEATH and THE MAN OF STONE by Zealia Bishop and Hazel Heald; two pieces of HPL juvenalia along with six fiction fragments; his essays on Dunsany, on the WRITING OF WEIRD FICTION and INTERPLANETARY FICTION and the many appreciations and salutes of HPL by Clark Ashton Smith, August Derleth, Donald Wandrei, Robert Barlow, Kenneth Sterling, Henry Kuttner and others. Also included are sixteen pages of photographs of HPL, his work, his study, and the various personalities with whom he became closely associated with - including Robert E. Howard and Clark Ashton Smith. A Fine copy with nice spring in the hinge; the gilt spine- stamping is still bright which is unusual. Very light trace of dusting to tops of page edges with a few fingerprints to cloth. One of the very nicest copies I've had in my forty years of collecting/selling. In a fine d.j. JOSHI: I-A-19.

H.P. LOVECRAFT: THE SHUTTERED ROOM!, LOVECRAFT, H.P.
20 LOVECRAFT, H.P. H.P. LOVECRAFT: THE SHUTTERED ROOM!
Sauk City Arkham House 1959 [First edition]. 2527 copies.
THE SHUTTERED ROOM is the third volume of the five HPL miscellanea and a particular favorite of mine (perhaps it's the very suggestive Richard Taylor d.j. illustration!). In August Derleth's introduction he notes how timely that to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Arkham House, a new HPL volume should be released as he himself stated - ""It seemed to us at Arkham House that our twentieth anniversary book ought to be a final collection of Lovecraftiana." But nothing set in stone Augie managed to find enough stuff for a few more. There are numerous HPL juvenalia present, reminiscences by Wandre, Derleth, Barlow, Galpin, Bloch and Dorothy Walter; additional stories by HPL and just way too much stuff to mention. A Fine copy in d.j,. JOSHI: I-A-32
