2 BLACKWOOD, Algernon. THE DOLL AND ONE OTHER—The Author's Last Book!
Sauk Citty, WI. Arkham House 1946 [First Edition]
With the end of WWII and paper shortages lifted, Derleth set out upon an ambitious program, publishing eight titles in 1946, with copy runs totaling over 27,000 copies! Of those eight titles were the two notable OMNIBUS volumes—WILLIAM HOPE HODGSON's—THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND, and ROBERT E. HOWARD's—SKULL-FACE; additionally three British authors. Other than the HODGSON omnibus, the British writers did not catch on with Arkham House readers and those titles languished on the shelves for over a decade—this Blackwood title being one of them. Only two stories in this small book which might have had something to do with its unpopularity although it WAS only published at $1.50 cover price. Two original stories—not WEIRD TALES reprints—THE DOLL and THE TROD. The author's last book. [3490 copies printed]. Atmospheric d.j., illo by Ronald Clyne. Fine in very lightly toned fine d.j. #28JS

THE INHABITANT OF THE LAKE., CAMPBELL, J. Ramsey.
4 CAMPBELL, J. Ramsey. THE INHABITANT OF THE LAKE.
Sauk City, Wisconsin Arkham House 1964
August Derleth has taken a lot of heat the past two decades, especially from the HPL crowd, but as an editor/publisher, he had 20/20 vision for talent, and this innocuous little book by a precocious eighteen-year-old, Cthulhu-Eyed, posthumous-protege of H. P. Lovecraft would soon blossom into—the OTHER lad from Liverpool(!):The British Isles equivilent of our own Stephen King, assuming the mantle of the the Dean of British Horror. This is the author's first book, really a salute to H.P. Lovecraft. But he would all too soon, find himself pushing his personal horrors towards a new direction incorporating the refined terrors of modern times. An important AH book. [2009 Copies Printed]. A Fine, white-paper copy in fresh d.j., with the merest trace of age to top edge of d.j. A listing from the Richard M. Jefts complete Arkham House collection. #RMJ18.

Twenty-two tales and a most entertaining introduction by the author espousing his complete disbelief in the supernatural, only to give examples in his own life which could lead anyone to believe in the supernatural! 9 DERLETH, August W. AUGUST DERLETH:THREE PROBLEMS FOR SOLAR PONS—SIGNED! The Richard M. Jefts, Mycroft & Moran Collection
Sauk City, Wisconsin Mycroft & Moran 1952 [First Edition]
It didn't quite turn out this way, but in his "Note For the Aficionado," which introduces this volume, Derleth stated—"These are quite possibly the last Solar Pons pastiches I shall write." Reminiscent of his intro to "Thirty Years of Arkham House," "With 1970, Arkham House enters upon its fourth (and very probably last decade). . ." which also proved premature! One of the handful or so of truly elusive Arkham House/Mycroft & Moran issuances ;"THREE PROBLEMS"—although stated in the colophon page an edition of "Two thousand copies," there were in truth only 996 copies printed. This is made more desireable with a "Cordially, August Derleth" signature. A fine fresh copy with a bookplate of the noted collector, Harold C. Worden. A listing from the Richard M. Jefts complete Arkham House collection. A listing from the Richard M. Jefts complete Arkham House collection. #RMJ14.

Sauk City, Wisconsin Arkham House 1950 [First Edition]
Another of those "handful" of truly elusive issuances from Arkham House/Mycroft & Moran, although the colophon states 553 copies, aparently the authoress took half the edition back to her hometown of Evansville and distributed copies amongst her friends and acquaintances! Hence only a few hundred were offered thru Arkham House. A Fine fresh copy that bears a Hannes Bok designed bookplate of Harold C. Worden, and the tidily written number in ink, ""K126." D.j., just the merest trace of age at spine—barely noticible. A lovely example. A listing from the Richard M. Jefts complete Arkham House collection. #RMJ15.

16 GRENDON, Stephen/DERLETH, August MR. GEORGE and OTHER ODD PERSONS.
Sauk City, Arkham House 1963 [First Edition]
Seventeen stories collected primarily from WEIRD TALES magazine. And as the author himself says of them in his introduction—"I have come to think many of them among the best macabre tales I have written." All the tales composed within a month(!) in the wee hours of the morning, and under great duress, as the author's primary assignment at that time was his novel, THE SHIELD OF THE VALIANT. A very fine copy in d.j., without the usual spine discoloration. Uncommon thus. The first listing from the Richard M. Jefts complete Arkham House collection. #RMJ1.

18 HODGSON, William Hope. DEEP WATERS

This British author was practically unknown here in the States, until Derleth published the landmark volume—HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND—some of the author's longer works: DEEP WATERS presents a sampling of the author's excellent shorter works. Lovecraft lauded Hodgson's work in his SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE. "THE VOICE IN THE NIGHT" contained herein is a classic in the literature. [2556 copies printed]. Sauk City, Wisconsin Arkham House 1967 [First Edition]
With the post-war issuances of GREEN TEA by Le Fanu, THE DOLL AND ONE OTHER by Blackwood and climaxing with this magnificent omnibus volume—THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND by Hodgson, Derleth proved himself again the trail-blazer, as he introduced American readership to some of the finest British fictioneers of their time; these volumes would soon be followed up by Coppard, Wakefield, and Hartley; then decades later be renewed by Campbell and Lumley. One of Arkham's greatest publishings, this volume contains, the title novel, THE BOATS OF THE GLEN CARRIG, THE GHOST PIRATES, and his epic Romance—THE NIGHT-LAND. Informative introduction by H.E. Koenig who introduced HPL to Hodgson's work, and a Bibliography of Hodgson by J. Langly Searles is invaluable! One corner just bumped which has also bumped a few rear pages, else a fine fresh copy in glorious Hannes Bok D.j. [3014 Copies Printed]. #RMJ37.
