Clark Ashton Smith kept a black leatherette notebook in which he would jot down ideas, poems, virtually anything that came into his head when he was walking or simply at home; some of these ideas were fleshed out into stories and poetry but the majority either were not, or were altered radically. When Rah Hoffman visited Smith, Smith read aloud from the notebooks which Rah immediately proclaimed it "The Black Book!" and the author thought that a grand idea. Portions of the "Black Book" were published by ACOLYTE but it wasn't until after the author's death that Rah Hoffman borrowed the book from Carol Smith and began work transcribing it and "translating" the text; Donald Sidney-Fryer typed it all out and also did some transcribing work. Hence the book was edited both by Donald Sidney-Fryer AND Rah Hoffman, given over to James Turner at Arkham House, and it was Turner who strongly felt that it should be issued in soft covers as the original Black Book was; even Roy Squires couldn't convince him to print it hardcover;which was a shame because it is an incredible wealth of material! Drew Smith did the splendid illustrations. This copy is SIGNED BY late, RAH HOFFMAN, and FRYER, and artist, ANDREW SMITH. [2588 Copies Printed]. Be careful of the spine lettering, it has a tendency to fade away and it wears poorly as it is not true gilt stamped! A fine copy.
