A very handsome complete set of first editions of the Arkham House, SELECTED LETTERS volumes in Fine condition in dust-jackets. VOL. 1, 1911-24. Letters to his earliest chums - primarily amateurs - such as Reinhardt Kleiner, James Morton, Maurice Moe, the brilliant Alfred Galpin, and his aunts. But then beginning in 1921 his correspondences with Frank Belknap Long and Clark Ashton Smith and the advent of WEIRD TALES in 1923, the interest picks up! Three photographs of Lovecraft letters and a photo of Galpin. Fifty years now since its initial publication it is especially difficult to find a copy with a "Blue" spine that has not turned to "Gray" as the gray just looks so natural!` This copy is faded to gray. VOL. II, 1925-29. - HPL hits his 'creative stride' with the composition of his finest tales; THE HORROR AT RED HOOK, IN THE VAULT, THE TERRIBLE OLD MAN, THE CALL OF CTHULHU, THE DREAM QUEST OF UNKNOWN KADATH, THE CASE OF CHARLES DEXTER WARD, THE SHUNNED HOUSE, THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE, THE DUNWICH HORROR and his terrific, SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE. Letters primarily to CAS, Long and Derleth. Photos printed on nice slick-paper of HPL at various stages of his life, Frank Belknap Long, Sonia Greene Lovecraft, Reinhardt Kleiner, August Derleth, 2 of Clark Ashton Smith with his sculptures, Samuel Loveman and a picture together of Donald Wandrei, HPL and Frank Belknap Long. Nice bright gile, fresh copy with no bumped corners; very very slight age tone to page edges - a Fine copy in d.j. VOL. III, 1929-31. HPL composes THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS, continues work on AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and writes some new poems in his FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH cycle. Robert E. Howard is added to the list of correspondents. Slick-paper photos of Farnsworth Wright & C.C. Senf, HPL & Long together, HPL, Long and Morton at the Poe cottage, Cthulhu Mythos sculptures by CAS, HPL in Brooklyn with eyes closed in bright sunllight, Robert Bloch & Derleth, together, Donald Wandrei, HPL's homes, a page from HPL correspondence. Bright tight copy with beautiful spine stamping; a few light fingerprints to cloth; no bumped corners! Very very light dust ingto page edges. A fine copy in d.j. VOL. IV, 1932-34. HPL composes, DREAMS IN THE WITCH HOUSE, and co-authors with E. Hoffmann Price, THROUGH THE GATES OF THE SILVER KEY; composes, THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH, THE THING ON THE DOORSTEP, and AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS is completed and rejected. Arkham House goes to a heavier cheaper paper with this volume and the George Banta company has been replaced with Edwards Brothers and the photographs are now printed on the same book paper rather than the more expensive slick-paper. Photos include, Robert Bloch, an HPL portrait, Henry S. Whitehead, HPL's own drawing for THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE, the title-page from the song, THE ELDER PHAROS composed by Harold Farnese, Robert E. Howard, E. Hoffmann price, Wilfred Blanch Talman, young Duane Rimel and F. Lee Baldwin of ACOLYTE fame, Robert Barlow, and the pretty Helen V. Sully. Tight copy with bright spine stamping, no bumped corners, no fingerprints on cloth. A Fine + copy in d.j. VOL. V, 1934-37. Composes THE SHADOW OUT OF TIME, THE HAUNTER OF THE DARK, and revises SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE. Photos include HPL in Florida, young August Derleth, Henry Kuttner, CAS and E.
