The third Arkham House book published and the author's 1st by this esteemed private publisher. Because of the paper restrictions during WW2 book editions were extremely limited and at 1054 copies published it is one of the smallest editions of prose published by AH and elusive in collectible condition. This copy belonged to the author himself as it was presented and inscribed to his school chum, "For Donald Shane, with many memories of our old school - days. Clark Ashton Smith, Auburn, Cal. "Dec. 19, 1942," the year of publication, making it one of the earliest copies signed. This book went out of print quite quickly and copies got away from CAS in a hurry so unless you visited him later, you never got your copy signed! Additionally is a holograph letter from the presentee, Donald Shane describing his knowing CAS and how the book came to him. Presentation copies dated the year of publication are rare. A few small edge chips to the d.j., a few ghost tape stains from the verso of the d.j., with the usual fading to the spine lettering; some rubbing to cloth, but a very good copy to very good+ copy. This is a difficult book to find in this collectible condition!
