The flagship volume which launched Arkham House; it's most important book. At [1268 copies printed] and in this the age of the Internet, it has become, the most common scarce book on the planet because virtually everyone saved their copy and did not offer it up for sale! According to Joshi, THE OUTSIDER was HPL's preferred title for a possible collection and he certainly was and wished to be that. It's a heavy book, shipped before the days of bubble-wrap and plastic "peanuts" hence three of the four corners are bumped; the book is otherwise a very good clean copy.; the spine-gilt is nice and bright and the pages are white with just a touch of dusting to the edges. The d.j., was affixed with four 1" pieces of old scotch tape that are still present but lost their adherence many decades ago; and the verso of the d.j. was in it's infancy, reinforced with brown paper tape. However IT IS the ORIGINAL Virgil Finlay d.j., and you won't get a better copy of the book for $3500, but you'll have to pay that if you want a better copy of the d.j. I myself owned this copy for years as a college student and sold it to Richard Jefts who was my first customer; this sale started me off in the career of professional book-seller. A listing from the Richard M. Jefts complete Arkham House collection. #RMJ16.
