Another amateur feud - or as I like to call them - tempests in teapots - under the header of "THAT ALL AMATEURS MAY KNOW," Lovecraft indeed DOES seem to be in the wrong here, or gotten his facts scrambled - "In the July . . . Conservative, that ultra-literary gentleman, Howard P. Lovecraft, stoops to an attempt to besmiorch the character of Mr. Dowdell with a recitation of alleged facts that the least investigation would prove to be false." Apparantly HPL accused Dowdell of NOT being a memober of the UNITED and for misuses of money. "The SUN . . . has never had occasion to refer to HPL heretofore but in a playful manner for his stand on various topies has only amused us. But when he brands the amateurs of Cleveland as 'turbulent' and their activity as 'blatant vulgarity' he presents a target for criticism too glaring to miss." There is also a humorous cartoon of HPL. FROM THE HYMAN BRADOFSKY COLLECTION.An early mention of HPL. Folded for mailing and in good condition.
