Lovecraft's poem, THE POWER OF WINE his first appearance in THE TRYOUT, April, 1916 is commented upon and quoted from in a half-column - "As usual, Mr. Lovecraft strikes a high poetic note . . . The Power of Wine is by no means a dry temperance lecture in verse. There is Miltonic strength in the opening lines - - "Hail, givt of Bacchus; red, delicious wine To raise the sould and every thought refine;"Some very early appearance and appraisals here of HPL.
