There is no such thing as an impartial biography and if there were it would be too boring to read! No matter how much one tries to be impartial, certain things move us or do not move us based upon our own personality and experience. De Camp's critical biography ("I saw in him certain of my own shortcomings . . . ") raised a howl amongst Lovecraft enthusiasts that kept HPL fanzines a-buzz for years afterward. S.T. Joshi has pointed out errors in the book but errors are noteworthy as they motivate us further to seek the truth. De Camp's biography flows well and reads quickly as one would expect from a pulp magazine veteran and I would urge it upon you as the one you read before you attempt to tackle Joshi's. This is a fine unread copy copy in a d.j. that would be very fine but for a 1/2" closed tear and wrinkle at lower front panel. No price clipping. NOW! Let's talk about "signed stickers" that seem to be the rage these days, at least on ebay anyway! A signed sticker does not make a signed book. Let me repeat, A SIGNED STICKER DOES NOT MAKE A SIGNED BOOK! It is merely a signed sticker as if you'd handed the author a piece of paper. So what's your signed piece of paper worth? I'll let you be the judge of that but to me it's worth damn little. Signed stickers in this bookseller's opinion just litter up the book as they essentially add no value to the book. Slight foxing at page edges of photos else about fine in v.g. d.j.
