The legendary FANTASY FAN, published by Charles Hornig—yes they called him affectionately, "Horny"—was an amazing vision and production, especially considering Hornig was just a teenager. H.P. Lovecraft was a major supporter and contributor as his work appears in seventeen of the eighteen issues published and includes first appearances of, FROM BEYOND, THE OTHER GODS, and reprints of the tales, POLARIS, and BEYOND THE WALL OF SLEEP, in addition to the serialization of HPL's fundamental treatise on horror literature—SUPERNATURAL HORROR IN LITERATURE. Robert E. Howard donated his Conan tale—THE FROST KING'S DAUGHTER, retitled by Hornig, GODS OF THE NORTH, and the Clark Ashton Smith issue contained CAS AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, THE DEMONIAN FACE-a brief memoir, short story, THE PRIMAL CITY and the poems, MEDUSA, and MALANOTH.The first issue had a print-run of 200 copies which was the number of subscribers Hornig really needed to have the magazine make any kind of a profit, but alas, the remaining issues were printed only in editions of 60 copies each.A subscription could've been had for $1 per year. This was RAH HOFFMAN's set—the noted fan, CAS friend, and co-editor of THE BLACK BOOK by Clark Ashton Smith—I doubt a finer set can be had. Very nice. Some issues folded for mailing.
