Up until the Arkham House issuance of SELECTED POEMS, in 1971, EBONY & CRYSTAL was the author's, best book, as it contained the first publication of his epic, THE HASHISH-EATER (and to my reader's ear, the finest version" . The book was inexpertly bound, lacking the endpapers, and the author was so upset that he didn't bother having his artwork design reproduced for a dust-jacket. The dust-jacket was printed up in an edition of 300 copies by Terence McVicker, to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the poet's birth, in 1993. Issued in an edition of 500 [actually 525} signed, numbered copies. The best copy I've ever found of this book. Approximately a dozen corrections in the author's hand. This was the author's first version of THE HASHISH-EATER, and was not reproduced in SELECTED POEMS.
