The companion volume to OUT OF SPACE AND TIME published by Arkham House in 1942. This copy is inscribed "To Don, from Clark Ashton Smith, Jan 12th 1947." "Don," referred to here, was his friend and collaborator Don Carter, a friend from Bowman, California, with whom CAS collaborated on the tale—"Nemesis of the Unfinished," which was not published until the issuance of STRANGE SHADOWS, edited by Steve Behrends, in 1985. Carter's wife, Natalie painted the portrait of Smith on the rear dust-wrapper cover for Selected Poems (Arkham House, 1971). You rarely find Clark Ashton Smith, signed, inscribed Arkham House books from this era in such splendid condition, because unlike HPL, CAS didn't travel around, you had to know him personally and come to his cabin in Auburn, to get your book signed. Rare in this condition. Fine with very slight fade to d.j., spine, and just a trace of dusting to page edges. I doubt this copy was read.
Title: LOST WORLDS. Arkham House, Sauk City, 1944. [First edition]. Signed, inscribed to collaborator, "Don [Carter] Jan. 12th, 1947" . A talented painter, Carter's wife Natalie, did the portrait of Smith that was reproduced on the dust-wrapper of Arkham House's—SELECTED LETTERS. A beautiful copy in d.j. Seldom found in this condition.
