Clark Ashton Smith's first book, and a remarkable poetic achievement for a man of the Auburn hills, and only nineteen years old. It would be six years before his next book, ODES & SONNETS. This is a special copy, being a presentation to Roy A. Squires, celebrating his visit to Smith, June 23rd, 1955 in his new Austin Healy 100. The book is actually signed three times; the year of publication (although not stated, but noted by Smith's backhand signature) to a presumed friend, Robert Scott, then inscribed below "compliments of Clark Ashton Smith, and signed again in Smith's early backhand signature on the half-title page. This copy bears its original dust-wrapper, tanned with age, as are the boards, but still a very good copy of a book over a century old. Roy A. Squires was the author's friend, publisher, and executor of his literary estate.
