A little booklet of obscure yet noteworthy LeGuin lore, beginning with her title essay, Dreams Must Explain Themselves, wherein she responds from a request by ALGOL editor, Andy Richards, to provide some background on herself and her conceiving of THE EARTHSEA TRILOGY. The essay evolved into her discussing how her story discovers her, and her writing method in getting it to page. The second entry is her early short story, THE RULE OF NAMES, which appeared in 1964; Le Guin's acceptance speech for her National Book Award for children's literature in 1972 is reproduced, "I am not only a fantasist but a science fiction writer, and odd though it may seem, I am proud to be both. We who hobnob with Hobbits and tell tale tales about little green men are quite used to being dismissed as mere entertainers, or sternly disapproved of as escapists.. . (but) it is above all by the imagination that we achieve perception, and compassion, and hope." The last entry is a perceptive interview of LeGuin, by Jonathan Ward.Limited to 1,000 numbered copies. A fine copy in stiff paper covers. Enchanting artwork by Tim Kirk.
